U2 Gets a Billboard Music Award Nomination
April 19, 2012

U2 is nominated in the Top Touring Artist category at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, which will be announced next month in Las Vegas. Other artists nominated in the category are Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, Take That and Roger Waters. U2's 360 tour wrapped up last summer as the highest-grossing concert tour ever.

The awards ceremony will take place Sunday, May 20th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. ABC-TV will air the event live at 8:00 pm ET.

U2 picks up two Billboard Touring Awards
November 10, 2011

U2 was a double-winner at the Billboard Touring Awards tonight in New York City. The U2 360 tour won the Top Tour and Top Draw awards. The first is for the highest-grossing tour of the year; the second is for the most tickets sold. As far as we know, no band members were on hand.

The U2 360 tour ran for more than two years (June 2009 through July 2011) and saw the band perform 100 concerts. The tour sold 7.1 million tickets and became the highest-grossing tour in history at $736 million.

Willie Williams Speaks About the Next U2 Tour
October 06, 2011

In a new interview with Live Design magazine, Willie Williams says there's already been some discussion about U2's future tour plans. And perhaps quite wisely, it sounds like no one has any intention of trying to outdo the size and scope of U2 360:

As for U2, we're already talking about the next one, and I'm excited about the ideas and the potential. It's funny, on the Zoo TV tour, people would ask, "However will you follow this?" to which I would reply, "The next one will be bigger," which, of course, it ended up being. This time around, though, I don't think that's a promise I'm going to make.

Williams' comments echo what The Edge and Adam have previously said about the next tour likely being very different from U2 360.

On a related note, Williams will also present at Live Design's Concert Master Classes -- a two-day workshop on December 3 and 4 dedicated to concert lighting and production in Los Angeles. His topic will be U2 360° Tour: Before, During, & After.

August 16, 2011

Today, we've added another set of newly discovered U2 concerts to our database -- 26 new shows, to be exact, along with 11 shows updated with new information and one show that turned out to be a false alarm. All of the details are below, including numerous scans from newspapers and magazines.

The Claw is Officially Up For Sale
July 14, 2011

U2 and Live Nation are really serious about selling The Claw. So serious that they issued a sales pitch news release today with details of the stage's availability (you can buy it as soon as the U2 360 show in Moncton is over) and even launched a mini website extolling The Claw's virtues.

Vancouver-based Panther Management is handling the sale, or at least doing the selling via its website. The company even suggests a few possible uses for the three Claws:

These highly adaptable structures can be re-engineered and, in effect, recycled to become new multi-use and headline grabbing entertainment venues or facilities including amphitheatres, civic plazas, corporate pavilions, world expositions or world cup stages, or something as unique as a bio dome or conservation lab.

Really, the highlight of it all is the PDF-formatted Claw presentation (1.3mb download) that any U2 fan is sure to enjoy, even if you don't have the budget to buy one. (Here at @U2 HQ, we'll be coordinating a bake sale soon to see if we can raise money to install one in the backyard.)

And yes, if you have a good memory, you may recall that the original talk was about donating the claws ... but then the idea of selling the claws made news a couple weeks ago.

Adam, Edge Talk About Future U2 Tours
June 10, 2011

As the 360 tour winds down this summer, The Edge and Adam have both speculated about what U2's next tour might look like. Their comments are in an interview posted today on RollingStone.com -- the same interview that the recent 2012 album news came from. Here's what they said about future tour plans:

Adam Clayton

I imagine everyone will get away from this tour and get a bit of breathing space, then in two or three years time, they'll be able to do it again. You have the same set of questions: "Do you want to play in a stadium?" "No, we don't want to play in a stadium." "Do you want to play in an arena?" "Yeah, we like playing in arenas." "But if you play in arenas, it will take you this long to get around the world, if you play in stadiums, you can do it over a couple of summers," and the debate will start.

Is it possible you'd put out a record and not do an insane world tour?

Obviously, when we release the record, we'll do a tour. I'm just pretty pedantic about doing it each step at a time, and as far as I'm concerned, there isn't a record until it's in the shops, and there isn't a tour until the record is out.

I don't think we'd want to do another stadium tour, but I don't know. If the record caught fire in a certain way, then we would. So we have to work these things out. I do like arena tours – they're much, much easier.

The Edge

I say it will be a while before anyone wants to think about it, but I'm sure the next time we go out, it will be quite different. That, I'm pretty confident about, but what that might be, there really is no clue at this point.

There's a lot of interesting stuff in the full interview, including comments about the Spider-Man project and its impact on the band. Highly recommended reading.
