I've had the pleasure of seeing well over 100 concerts, but this stands out as my favorite. It was absolutely electrifying. There were several performers before U2.
Lou Reed, Brian Adams, Peter Gabriel and others. Even a Police reunion with Sting.
By the time 9 o'clock came around, everyone was getting tired since the show started in the afternoon. I and most of the fans assumed the Police would come on before U2.
The crowd was there to see U2, no doubt about it. When the promoter came out and
introduced "a great band from Ireland" the place went up for grabs. After a somber MLK, Bono broke into Pride and the crowd, with arms raised, moved together like wheat in the wind. I've seen great concert moments, such as Springsteen's live Jungleland and Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, but nothing compared to this.
Bad was absolutely hipnotic too. After the show, half of the arena emptied out before Sting and the Police came out. It was nothing personal, but the religious experience U2 put on just zapped every ounce of energy from the audience.
